Spending time with my Big is like a vacation in the middle of my week. Having that made dealing with everything else a little easier.

Rick, 12

I have been with my Big since I was 7. I want to become a Big when I get older, after I get my life on track with a job and a family.

Brian, 13

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Good Friend program?
The Good Friend program matches/pairs a Little Friend (you!) with a Big Friend (a caring adult mentor).

What does a Big Friend do?
A Big Friend mentor is an adult who you can spend time with and talk to. Big Friend mentors are especially good listeners who care about their Little Friend very much.

Think of them like your friends from school, the only difference is that they are adults.  A Big and Little learn from each other and have fun together. They will not replace your parent and they are not your teacher.

What can a Little Friend and Big Friend do together?
You and your Big Friend will spend 3 hours a week or 3 hours every other week together doing fun activities that you can enjoy together like going to the park, baking cookies or watching a movie. You and your Big Friend will decide on the fun things you do together for every outing and the activities should be free or low cost. A Big is not expected to buy you expensive things and take you to expensive places. It’s just about having fun and becoming good friends!

What is my responsibility as a Little Friend?
As a Little friend your responsibility is to share ideas with your Big and tell them what you like to do and what you don’t like to do. Be respectful and say thank you after outings. Remember to make calls or return calls to your Big. Tell your parent and caseworker about what you do with your Big. And most of all have a great time with them!

Is there anything else I should know about Good Friend?
Being part of the Good Friend program will also allow you to join in on special events year round such as hiking, camping and other fun activities.

The Good Friend staff are very nice people who want to make sure that you and your Big Friend are having a great time together. They are always available to talk – even if its just to say “hello”!
